MADISON (WKOW)-- Looking for a way to keep the kids busy this summer and give them a taste of science and technology?
Scholarships are still available for students to attend the 4-H Gateway Academy July 6-9 at Madison East High School, according to Lesly Scott, Dane County 4-H Youth Educator.
The science-focused hands-on day camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day and is open to students going into ninth grade at any area school.
Students will get hands-on experience with simple rocketry and computer-aided 3-D design and will build and compete their own robot vehicles, said Miles Tokheim, the Madison Schools technology teacher who will mentor the academy.
Tokheim said the goal is to inspire students to explore science, technology, engineering and math and to consider pursuing a career in those important fields. "Math, technology and science tend to scare kids a little. I try to show them it's fun," Tokheim said.
There is a $75 fee to attend the Gateway Academy, Scott said, but full scholarships are still available for students who need help. Tokheim said last year's academy had a waiting list, but the program has been expanded for 2009, so places are still available.
