WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKOW) -- President Barack Obama says he is still committed to closing the Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba.
The President's message to shut down the controversial prison came on the same day he announced there were no plans to send any more detainees from Guantanamo to Yemen in the near future.
Almost half of the 198 detainees currently at Guantanamo are from Yemen.
Officials say the man charged with trying to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day met with extremists in Yemen before he allegedly tried to carry out his attack -- heightening concerns about terrorists in the Arab nation.
Obama says the U.S. has been dealing with the ongoing security situation in Yemen for some time.
