Wis. senator insults former archbishop

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- A state senator hurled insults in the direction of a former Milwaukee archbishop Tuesday.

Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) called former Archbishop Rembert Weakland "just a piece of work. Unbelievable." Grothman made the comments during a hearing on a bill to eliminate limitations on civil actions against child sex abusers.

Back in 2002, Weakland admitted the archdiocese paid $450,000 in secret to a man who accused Weakland of sexual abuse. The former archbishop resigned thereafter.

Weakland was allowed to attend current the installation Mass of current Archbishop Jerome Edward Listecki. Grothman referred to the church leaders in charge of that decision as "screwballs."

Weakland did not immediately return an e-mail seeking a response.
