DANE COUNTY (WKOW) -- Traffic fatalities relating to drunken driving were down in 2009, thanks in part to additional patrols by the Dane County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies worked overtime to target drunk drivers with the held of a county-funded grant and stopped over 1,200 vehicles, including 49 drunken drivers. The Sheriff's Office issued 307 Operating While Intoxicated citations, nearly 50 of them made by deputies working overtime.
"These special patrols helped get dozens of drunk drivers off our roads and prevent more unnecessary pain and tragedy that too many families in our county and state experience each year," said Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk.
Sheriff's Dave Mahoney also noted alcohol was a factor in 11 of the 33 fatal traffic crashes in the county last year, compared with 17 alcohol related traffic deaths in 2008.
