Heat stops Madison Marathon

MADISON (WKOW) -- Heat stopped the Madison Marathon Sunday morning.

According to Scott Smith, Marketing Director with the Madison Marathon, runners could continue to run the race at their own risk and aid stations remained open. Timing was stopped and Madison Metro buses were available to pick up runners that wished to leave the race.

Keith Peterson, the Madison Marathon director, said, "We keep our medical stations open, we keep our water stations open, we encourage people to slow down or walk, we even have buses picking people up, but we don't just shut down."

1900 people signed up for the full marathon. The last time organizers closed the Madison course was in 2006, when temperatures rose into the 90s.

Ricky Reusser, from Middleton, won the men's division for the fourth straight year. Erin Manlove, from Minneapolis, won the women's division.
