MADISON (WKOW) -- A spokesperson for the Madison police says lead case investigator, MPD Det. Tom Helgren was able to identify 18-year-old Marcos A. Gamez, of Madison, as the suspect in the attempted murder outside of East Towne mall over the weekend.
Gamez turned himself in Tuesday, after learning that he was wanted by Det. Helgren. He has been tentatively charged with Attempted 1st Degree Intentional Homicide.
The Madison Police Department's Crime Prevention & Gang Unit (CPGU) provided significant assistance in the probe by helping conduct interviews, and by supplying intelligence to Det. Helgren.
The preliminary investigation indicates Gamez, who is gang affiliated, helped start a fight in the parking lot with members of a rival gang by mouthing off to the other group. The original physical fight was between two of Gamez's friends, and two young men from the other group. The 24-year-old victim, who is also gang affiliated, and was with the other gang members (not with Gamez's group), decided to intervene and try to break up the two-on-two fight. When he did so, he was stabbed by Gamez. Gamez, like the victim, had not been actively involved in the original physical fight. The victim is in stable condition at a local hospital.
