MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison property owners should have their property tax bills by now, and on Monday the city treasurer announced a few new online features for property tax payment.
First - if you have Internet access, you can print your own receipt. Payments will be posted to the city's website the same day it's processed. Simply allow a few days for the post office to deliver you payment, then click here to go to the city's website. On the city's home page you will find a link for paying your property tax. Once you find your property, click on "tax details." Your payment will be listed at the bottom of the page next to a button labeled "print tax receipt." Simply click the button and your receipt will be ready to print.
You can also pay your property taxes online. The city absorbs the cost for taxpayers to pay using eCheck. Payments made by debit or credit card are handled by a third-party vendor who charges the taxpayer a fee for using the option. To pay online, simply click here.
New this year, businesses can search for their personal property tax information online. By clicking here, you can find the amount of your tax and pay using the same options as private property taxpayers.
If you prefer to pay in person, you still have time. The city treasurer's office will be closed for holidays on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, and Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday on January 18th. The city treasurer's office is located in the City County Building.
The deadline to pay your property tax is January 31, 2010.
If you pay your property tax prior to December 31, you can deduct the taxes as an itemized deduction on your Federal Form 1040 for income tax. Meeting the deadline is a matter between you and the IRS, the city is not involved. However, the city will accommodate taxpayers who wait until December 31 by issuing receipts dated the same as the postmark on the payment. For example, payments received in an envelope postmarked 12/31 will have a receipt dated 12/31.
