Suspect in Copps auto theftMADISON (WKOW) -- A police chase in Madison ends in a deadly crash on Midvale Boulevard. The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the suspect as 20-year-old Wayne Stevens, Jr., from the Town of Dunn.
The deadly crash happened in the 300 block of Midvale on Monday.

A spokesperson for the Dane County Sheriff's Department tells 27 News the crash is related to a stolen truck at a Copps in Madison.
Dane County Sheriff's Deputies say around 10:40 a.m. Monday, they were notified by the Iowa County Sheriff's Office that two vehicles were racing toward Dane County on Highway 18/151. Verona police spotted the two vehicles in Verona and tried to stop them. Verona police initiated a pursuit but ended it for safety reasons. One of the vehicles crashed on Maple Grove Road in Madison. A Dane County Sheriff's Deputy spotted the second vehicle on Verona Road and learned that the car was reportedly stolen from Richland County. The deputy and Madison police tried to stop the vehicle, but when the drivers refused to stop, a pursuit began at Midvale and Tokay Blvd. Authorities say the pursuit was brief and was called off as the suspect approached a hill on Mineral Point Road. The suspect continued on at high speeds and lost control of the vehicle, hitting a tree near the intersection of Midvale Blvd and Mineral Point Rd.
Stevens was pronounced dead. The autopsy confirmed that Stevens died due to his injuries in the crash.
Following the crash, deputies and officers recovered nine firearms from the vehicle. This crash is being investigated by the Madison Police Department.
The suspect who crashed his vehicle on Maple Grove Road, fled on foot and then stole another vehicle from the parking lot of the Copps store on McKee Road just before 11 a.m. Monday. He abandoned that vehicle just off Muirfield Road. It is believed the man then fled on foot again. Police are still looking for him.
The first vehicle that he crashed on Maple Grove Road had been reported stolen from Crawford County. The suspect's image was caught on a store surveillance camera as he ran through the Copps yelling for everyone to get down. He may be armed and anyone that has information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911 immediately.
The Dane County Sheriff's Office is also investigating whether these men may be connected to the report of a stolen vehicle over night from the town of Dunn. That vehicle was recovered Monday in Crawford County.
