This time, extra innings were not for the birds.
A day after falling 6-5 to the UW-Whitewater Warhawks in 12 innings, UW-Platteville beat Edgewood's Eagles 7-6 Thursday in 11th innings in Verona.
Jason Jacobson, who homered in the ninth inning to tie the score at Whitewater, gave UWP a 7-6 lead with a home run in the 11th against Edgewood.
Justin Cox, who entered the game in an extreme pressure situation in the 10th, pitched a 1-2-3 11th inning to preserve the win.
Cox came in relief with the bases-loaded and two outs in the 10th and induced Scott Ortega into a groundout to third basesman Lee Hawkins.
The Pioneers improved to 17-15 overall, while the Eagles fell to 19-11.
Derrick Rice's infield single to short with two outs in the ninth, scored Jacobson and capped a four-run inning. Jacobson and Brett Benesh each singled home runs, and Hawkins drew a bases-loaded walk in the five-hit inning.

The Eagles scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, then three in the seventh and one in the eighth for the 6-2 lead. Alex Berta had three hits and drove in three runs to pace the Edgewood attack.
