Teen accused of shoplifting, abandoning young niece at mall

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Police arrested a teenager Friday afternoon for allegedly shoplifting and abandoning her young niece while fleeing from authorities.

According to police, the 18-year-old woman was stopped by a loss prevention officer in the parking lot of West Towne Mall after a store employee chased her from J.C. Penney.

The suspect was found wearing multiple layers of allegedly stolen clothing and had other garments stuffed in her pants. The retail value of the stolen merchandise totaled around $500.

The teen is tentatively charged with Retail Theft and Child Abandonment, because she also allegedly left her four-year-old niece while running from store employees.

Witnesses told police the little girl couldn't keep up with her aunt and was left behind, crying and screaming "Don't leave me" and "wait."

The child was turned over to another relative at her mother's request.
