MADISON (WKOW)--A proclamation from Governor Jim Doyle names the week of May 17-23 Emerald Ash Borer Awareness Week. Wisconsin will be one of 15 states observing the week designed to all attention to the ash borer problem.
Since last summer, the emerald ash borer (EAB) has been confirmed in two locations in Wisconsin: in the southeast in the Village of Newburg, and most recently in the Vernon County community of Victory, along the Mississippi River. The ash borer is a beetle that attacks and kills all species of trees in North America.
Discovered near Detroit in 2002, it has now spread to at least 10 states and in to Canada. The beetle is native to Asia. For more information visit www.emeraldashborer.wi.gov.
