CAZENOVIA (WKOW) -- The Humane Society of the US wants all 340 dogs removed from the Thyme and Sage Ranch in Cazenovia.
As of Wednesday afternoon, about 200 dogs had been taken to the Dane County Humane Society and more were on the way. However, authorities were able to seize those dogs citing them as evidence in a criminal case against the owner, Jennifer Petkus.
"We had a vet assess all the animals on site and those that were deamed to be in need of medical care or we thought may not be properly taken care of were seized by the county," explained Jordan Crump, public information officer for the Humane Society of the United States.
The Humane Society says Petkus might be able to retain some of the dogs, and it doesn't want that to happen. The Humane Society says the overall conditions at the ranch are not healthy for any dogs.
"We're hoping for the best interest of these animals would be to get them to foster groups and rescues who can give the proper care they need," said Crump. "If she doesn't surrender them, it has to go through the courts."
Petkus was in court for a bail hearing at 1:15 Wednesday afternoon. Her next appearance is next Friday.
