Family on a Mission

MILTON (WKOW)-- We have shared with you the statistics for months now.

Foreclosures are on the rise.

But one Milton family took what is usually a moment of despair and turned it into an opportunity.

We feature the entire Bentz family in tonight's "Someone You Should Know."

The Bentz family boys often spend time tossing a frisbee in the backyard of a friends home in Milton.

The frisbee may be one of the things they bring with them when they move.

After all,, it's lightweight and small.

They will have to be very selective when they pack.

The whole family, Dad Mark, Mom Linda, 15 year old Patrick, 13 year old Ellen, 9 year old Charlie and 5 year old Wesley are moving to Africa.

"I don't really want to leave here, but I want to go there," said Patrick.

The Bentz lost their home last year to foreclosure.

They saw it as a sign.

"We haven't been successful in the world's eyes, but the fact that God can still choose us and take us out of that and choose to send us somewhere to do his work is amazing to us," said Linda.

The family sold most of everything they owned.

"We started selling off everything and it was like a great weight was lifted," said Mark.

And are now fundraising to pay for travel and living expenses in Lesotho, Africa.

"What we are doing is developing a team of people that have a heart towards the people of Africa," said Linda. "Like Patrick said, we're the ones going, but this team behind us that's supporting us, we can't do it without them."

The family will do mission work through an organization called Africa Inland Mission.

Mark will teach.

Linda will assist in-home child births.

"When we saw the kids and heard their stories, it just made me want to do whatever I could for them," said Ellen.

Patrick will attend a boarding school, while Linda home-schools the younger ones.

"God's will is more important than my own feelings and comfort zone," said Patrick.

When the Bentz come back to the states in 2 and a half years, the Bentz hope they've grown and left the people they've touched in Africa, better educated and closer to their faith.

"When people ask us are we worried, are we scared, are we excited, we feel all those emotions all the time," said Linda.

"Concert for Africa" will be held July 11 at 5 p.m. at the Milton High School Auditorium, headlined by the Christian rock band The Least of These.

Proceeds from the concert will go to Africa Inland Missions to help fund the Bentz's two-year mission.

Seats for the event are $10 each, and can be purchased in advance at four locations in Milton: Piggly Wiggly, Robin's Nest, The Red Rooster, or the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church. Tickets will also be sold at the door on the night of the concert. Children under 12 will be admitted free.

Africa Inland Missions is a nondenominational evangelical group that serves 18 countries with more than 800 missions.

The Least of These is a Chicago-area Christian rock band featuring two members originally from Milton, Ben and Josh Calhoun. Their second album is due to be released this summer. The band's website is www.theleastofthese.com
