WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- The Washington Post is reporting online that former Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara has died.
McNamara served as secretary of defense during the Vietnam war under presidents Kennedy and Johnson and became one of the most controversial figures during that conflict.
In later years, McNamara conceded that the Kennedy and Johnson administrations had been "terribly wrong" on Vietnam.
After leaving the Pentagon, McNamara became president of the World Bank and devoted much of his career to helping the world's poorest nations.
The Post says McNamara died in his sleep at his home in Washington early Monday. He was 93.
