MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin still leads the country in mink production, but this year it dipped slightly.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Wisconsin produced 910,000 mink pelts in 2008, taht's down about a half percent from 2007.
That's well about Utah, which was second in the U.S. with about 550,000 pelts last year.
About one of every three mink pelts in produced in Wisconsin.
Nationwide, 2.79 million pelts were produced, a 1 percent decline over the previous year.
The price of pelts has dropped steeply over the last few years. The average price in 2008 was $41.50. That's a decrease of more than 35 percent from 2007, when the average pelt was worth around $65.
