MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- A popular hippo at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C. is moving to Milwaukee.
The 28-year-old Nile hippopotamus, named Happy, was born at the park but needed a new home because the zoo was expanding its elephant facilities to take over Happy's area.
He will be placed in a new indoor facility at the Milwaukee County Zoo with female hippos, Patty and Puddles, in late summer or early fall with hopes they will mate.
Smithsonian National Zoological Park spokeswoman Karin Korpowski-Gallo described the 11-foot long, 5,500-pound hippo as a "rockstar" with fans all over the nation. She says hippos live 40 to 50 years in the wild but usually well over that in captivity.
