MADISON (WKOW)-- A former Dane County sex offender will spend time in prison for moving to Mississippi without permission.
Walter Sanders will spend 14 months behind bars for failure to update his sex offender registration when he moved without permission from Wisconsin to Mississippi. In October 2000, Sanders was convicted in Dane County, Wisconsin, of second degree sexual assault - use of force, and was required to register as a sex offender for life pursuant to Wisconsin law.
Sanders complied with the registry until October 2007, when he failed to respond to registry inquiries and a warrant was issued for his arrest for non-compliance.
Sanders was arrested in Mississippi in January 2009. Sanders will serve this sentence consecutive to an unrelated Wisconsin state sentence. The judge expressed concern over Sanders' history of battery to women, anger issues and abuse of alcohol.
