Generic verses Name Brand beauty products

Generic or store-brand beauty products are gaining in popularity because of their lower cost. But are they as good as their brand-name counterparts?

Leesa Suzman Beauty Director, Good Housekeeping "You definitely want to go with a name brand when you're looking for something to be an anti-aging product or anything that is going to produce a benefit over time."

One category that clearly favored the brand name was anti-aging moisturizers. Olay Definity Intense Hydrating Cream beat out the generic version by more than 50%.

Leesa Suzman "The generic product didn't even contain the active ingredient that is the essential anti-aging ingredient in the Olay product."

But with a basic body lotion, the generic version tied with the brand name equivalent. That's because the simpler the ingredients, the easier it is for a private label brand to copy the formula.

Leesa Suzman "So it makes sense when all you are really looking to do is moisturize your skin that you would be able to find a copy that's actually pretty good."

And Good Housekeeping says it's worth trying a generic brand first because most big name stores will give you your money back if you don't like their product.
