A Different Perspective

FORT ATKINSON (WKOW)-- Time is of the essence when searching for a missing person.

And a Fort Atkinson woman says she has an advantage, reaching places others on foot or ATV can't. It's what makes Kricket Jewett "Someone You Should Know."

Kricket Jewett loves to ride horses. She's been doing it for as long as she can remember.

And, Kricket knows that horses, like 10-year-old Hacksaw, can mean the difference between life and death when looking for a missing person.

"A mounted search team is quick, I can go a lot quicker than a person on foot can, I am also quieter than an ATV," said Kricket.

"I'm also on a horse so I'm about 10 feet tall verses 6 feet; I've got a better vantage point," said Kricket.

Kricket and Hacksaw are apart of the volunteer Whitewater Area Mounted Search Team and Rescue.

"I thought what a great opportunity to give back to the community," said Kricket.

But Kricket doesn't just wait for a call to come in.

"We have 30 different requirements the horse has to do before you can go out on active search because we don't want a horse acting up and endangering the group," said Kricket.

She showed us some of the training they go through.

I jumped on to see what Kricket sees.

"You can see going through the grass how tall we are looking out over that, that would be able to see a lost victim or a clue easier than a man on foot," said Kricket.

She's right, your perspective changes drastically.

But Hacksaw can do more than just give Kricket a better view, she has another pair of eyes and ears.

"So if someone is in the woods hiding, afraid to come out, he may see them, smell them, hear them before I do and look than I'll have to understand what he's telling me and get off and look," said Kricket.

While they hope they are not needed, Kricket and Hacksaw are prepared for the call.

"I would hope if my daughter's lost that somebody would go out and help," said Kricket.
