MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- General Mitchell Airport in Milwaukee is getting $6.3 million in federal stimulus funds to lengthen two runways.
The U.S. Department of Transportation said Thursday the money will be used to add what they call runway safety areas at the airport.
Airport spokeswoman Pat Rowe says the safety areas will keep passengers safe in case an aircraft overshoots its runway. She says that while those incidents are rare, they can be dangerous.
Rowe says the construction will comply with federal regulations mandating that commercial runways have 1,000-foot safety areas.
Two of the airport's three commercial runways will be lengthened. One is nearly two miles long and will be extended 300 feet. The other is about 1.5 miles long and will be lengthened about 540 feet.
