MADISON (WKOW) -- Gov. Jim Doyle says even though U.S. Rep. Ron Kind has decided not to run for governor, Democrats will still have a strong candidate next year.
Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton is the only announced Democratic candidate so far. Doyle and Lawton do not have a strong working or personal relationship.
Doyle did not praise Lawton when asked Thursday whether he thinks Democrats will have a good candidate next year. Doyle did praise Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, who is considering a run.
Doyle says he's talked several times with Barrett about the race, but whether he runs will be up to the mayor.
Kind surprised many with his announcement on Thursday that he was not going to run for governor.
