DEFOREST (WKOW) -- A 17-year-old boy from DeForest could face multiple charges after he allegedly stole a car out of a garage on Trailside Drive.
The car's owner told police that the keys to the car were left in the unlocked, open garage on a bench. At some point between midnight and 12:30 a.m. on September 27, the teen went into the garage and used the keys to drive the 2007 Mazda without the owner's permission.
At about 3:45 a.m. that morning, a passing driver reported a vehicle in the ditch on highway DM just east of US 51 in Columbia County. DeForest police sent officers out to the location and they determined the vehicle was the same as the Mazda stolen from Trailside Drive. It had significant front end damage.
Charges against the 17-year-old suspect have been referred to the District Attorney's office. Tentative charges include Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Owner's consent and Burglary. The teen was also cited for violating a city ordinance of Operating a Motor Vehicle by Permittee Without Instructor, Parent, or Authorized Person Over 21.
