MADISON (WKOW) -- A suspect and spectators in a Dane County courtroom erupted into a scene of chaos after a jury handed down a guilty verdict.
According to a news release, the jury ruled defendant Dwight Scott guilty for charges of armed robbery and burglary. The ruling took in Judge Flanagan's Branch 12 courtroom place about 9:30 p.m. Thursday.
Scott became visibly upset and refused to follow deputies' orders. The release indicates he struggled to leave the courtroom. Deputies would pepper spray him in order to put on handcuffs while he lay on the floor.
Approximately ten family and friends of Scott present in the courtroom in turn became upset and began yelling profanities at the deputies attempting to take Scott into custody. The release stated "spectators became increasingly vocal and approached the courtroom partition continuing to yell at the deputies."
Deputies from the jail had to arrive on scene to order observers outside the courtroom. Weapons Screening staff and officers from the Madison Police Department were also called to escort people outside the courthouse.
The only minor scrapes to one of the deputies was reported. Scott may additionally be charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
