MADISON (WKOW) -- Authorities said a Madison police officer was punched and surrounded during a melee involving teenagers at Madison's north bus transfer point.
Police spokesperson Joel DeSpain told 27 News officer Ryan Finnegan responded to reports of a fight at the transfer point Sept. 18. DeSpain said emergency dispatchers were told as many as forty people had been involved.
Police reports state Finnegan was punched, possibly several times, after the transfer point dispute had evolved into a fight between a handful of teenage girls.
Reports state Finnegan prepared to use pepper spray after being punched. Reports state Finnegan instead relied on arriving officers to help him with the fight.
DeSpain said the fight at the transfer point developed from an earlier dispute at East High school.
DeSpain said Shanon Holmes, 17, was cited for misdemeanor disorderly conduct, as was a 15 year old girl.
DeSpain said Finnegan did not require hospitalization.
