Man indicted for abducting girl in KY and bringing her to WI

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WKOW) -- A man from Maine accused of abducting a 13-year-old girl in Kentucky and setting off an Amber Alert that finally ended in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. has been indicted in federal court.

The indictment accuses 43-year-old Archie Whalen of transporting a minor across state lines to engage in criminal sexual activity.

The 13-year-old Owensboro girl was taken from her home on Sept. 26, triggering a nationwide Amber Alert. Police say they found with her and Whalen as he was pulling into a hotel parking lot in Sturgeon Bay early the next day.

If Whalen is convicted on the federal charge, he faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a minimum sentence of ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

He is scheduled to appear in court in Owensboro, Ky., on October 22.
