LOS ANGELES (WKOW) -- The low budget film "Paranormal Activity" won the weekend box office over horror film compatriot "Saw VI."
The independent film took in $22 million in its first weekend in nationwide release.
The sixth installment of the Saw franchise, which has released a film annually since 2004, took in just $14.8 million this weekend. That's the worst opening for any "Saw" film.
Spike Jonze's children's movie "Where the Wild Things Are" fell to third in its second week.
It was followed by the Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx co-star thriller "Law Abiding Citizen."
Rounding out the top five at the box office was the romantic comedy "Couples Retreat."
