Janesville offers up cold weather, holiday shopping safety tips

JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- As the mercury dips lower and the holiday shopping season ramps up, the Janesville Police Department has a few safety reminders for everyone.

These simple steps can help reduce your chances of having items stolen from your car, as well as reduce the likelihood that your car will be stolen this winter:

  • Never start your vehicle to warm it up in cold weather and leave the vehicle unattended while its running
  • Always lock your vehicle and keep all windows rolled up when you park.
  • If possible, park in a well lit and traveled area: avoid isolated areas.
  • Do not leave items of value in plain view inside your vehicle: place the items in the trunk.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and be alert to things that look out of place or suspicious.
  • Have your car keys in your hand when returning to your vehicle so you will not become distracted.
  • Do not leave ANY keys, including ignition or house keys, in your parked vehicle while it is secured in your garage at home.

Janesville Police officers want to remind everyone that the easiest way to prevent theft is by reducing the opportunity for anyone to steal your property.
