Mother opens up about toddler's H1N1 death

LA CROSSE (WKOW) -- A mother opened up Thursday about her 21-month-old daughter's sudden death from the H1N1 virus in October.

Debra Komperud said there were no warning signs for her daughter's death. They attended a wedding in Wausau the previous day, and the toddler, Aberianna, was happy and energetic at the reception and slept through the drive home.

The next morning, Komperud said her daughter was cold, blue and breathing heavily. Paramedics flew the toddler from her Cashton home to La Crosse, and emergency responders performed CPR futilely several times.

Komperud learned several days later from the medical examiner that Aberianna had the H1N1 virus.

Complete autopsy results are pending. The family is waiting to see if there was any unknown health condition that may have contributed to the girl's death.
