Veterans Day: local events honor American troops


MADISON (WKOW) -- A number of events are planned for Veterans Day, November 11, as a way to honor our brave men and women:

-- Veterans Day Ceremony at the State Capitol at 10:00 a.m., hosted by the Madison Veterans Council. VFW Band 1318 will kick off the event, followed by the presenting of the Colors. Governor Jim Doyle, U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin and U.S. Army Reserve Brigadier General Marcia Anderson are all scheduled to speak

-- The Wisconsin Veterans Museum will be open from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on Veterans Day across from the state capitol.

-- Madison Area Technical College's Vets for Vets Club is hosting several events, including:

  • 8-11:00 a.m. Mock interviews/resume workshop in Rooms A/B Truax Campus
  • 1-3:00 p.m. Walk-in hours for veterans/questions at the Enrollment Center 159D Truax Campus
  • 3:30-6:00 p.m. Keynote speaker Don Heiliger, Vietnam Veteran and former POW, at Room 142C Truax Campus

-- From 7-11:00 a.m., Hy-Vee's deli will offer free breakfast to all veterans/service members.

-- A program will be held at Waunakee Middle School on South St. at 10:30 a.m. with a reception to follow in the 2nd floor library.

-- At 11:00 a.m., there will be a memorial service and program at the WWI Monument in Triangle Park in Oregon, followed by free lunch and music for veterans at the Oregon Senior Center on Park St., sponsored by the VFW Post 9362

-- At 11:45 a.m. in Stoughton, you can catch a presentation at the Senior Center on Main St.

-- A flag ceremony at Hometown Junction in Verona at 11:00 a.m. will be followed by a program at the Verona Senior Center on Paoli St. at 12:15 p.m.

-- Waubesa Intermediate School in McFarland will host a Veterans Day program at 1:45 p.m.

-- Tonight, the Chazen Museum of Art will host a panel discussion and reception to highlight its Portraits of Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans series. The discussion begins at 6:00 p.m., with a reception following at 7:00 p.m.
