For 21 years, the IBEW and NECA have been sponsoring the Holiday Fantasy in Lights display as a community service. Beginning at Warner Park in the late 1980s, the display has continued to change and grow over the years, however, one element of the event has remained constant. It is free to the public. In the mid-1990s, the event moved to its current Olin Park location, which provided not only a more central spot, but also a more scenic park featuring hills and stunning views of the State Capitol across Lake Monona. The event is undergoing a dramatic change in 2009 as the displays will all be converted to LEDs (light emitting diodes) which result in a huge change in the energy needed to light the event. Admission remains free, however, donations are accepted at the donation booths which are manned by volunteer organizations, and a holiday card and candy canes are distributed to all vehicles that stop by from 4:30 pm to 10:00 pm each day. Another new feature this year is that one of the displays will be lit with solar power, so we hope for nice sunny days! The event runs from November 14, 2009 through January 3, 2010 and the lights will be on from dusk to dawn each of those days. For more information, go to www.fantasyinlights.com.
