World's first solar-powered, manned-aircraft flight
SWITZERLAND (WKOW) -- The world's first electric airplane took flight this week in Dubendorf, Switzerland. The Solar Impulse barely got off the ground, but it still goes down as the only manned electric craft to leave the ground under its own power.
The craft has a wingspan the size of a long haul jet, but weighs about as much as a midsize car. It runs off 400 kilograms of batteries. The goal of the craft's inventors is to fly it around the world entirely on solar power. Its wings are covered in solar panels that recharge the batteries.
