WICHITA (WKOW) -- A laid-off GM worker got his life out of the gutter, became a professional bowler, and won a years salary at a PBA Championship event.
Tom Smallwood of Saginaw used to work at the GM truck factory in Pontiac, Michigan, but took up bowling full-time when he lost his job.
He called himself a "pretty good" bowler, before he took up the sport.
Now Smallwood bowled in the PBA World Championship in Wichita, Kansas this weekend, and he won the first prize for the event of $50,000.
Smallwood says he drove 15-hours to the event, because taking his 18 bowling balls on a plane would cost too much in baggage fees.
