MADISON (WKOW) -- A Madison elementary school is collecting pennies to give kids overseas access to education
On Tuesday night, Lowell Elementary School held its first annual Pennies for Peace program. It included a music and an art showcase.
All the money raised from students and their families is going to help support schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
"Its kind of coming off of the book 'Three Cups of Tea,'" said Lowell Principal Lisa Kvistad, "educating women in Afghanistan and Pakistan is one of the ways to really build the countries' culture and economy."
Principal Kvistad says she expects the jars of pennies to weigh down her truck on the way to the bank.
The school plans to send the money before winter break.
