SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW)-- Nine years ago, a Sun Prairie teen's life was cut short after being hit by a drunk driver.
But the tragic end to her son's life motivated Pam Skaanning to give back.
Pam's efforts to save lives makes her this month's Jefferson Award recipient and this week's 'Someone You Should Know.'
"He was such a carefree, easy going person," said Pam Skaanning.
Pam Skaanning cherishes the pictures of her son, Jason, growing up.
Pam lost her 17-year-old son August 27, 2000. Jason was out delivering newspapers Sunday morning at about 5:30 a.m. He was parked along side of the road organizing his route when a drunk driver hit Jason's car.
"She basically slammed into the back of the car and it burst into a fireball," said Pam.
Pam spent the next couple of years grieving and talking about the effects of drinking and driving.
"From the very beginning, I just have had this drive to not let Jason just die and be a statistic," said Pam.
Then, Pam turned her pain into hope.
For 5 years now, Pam has held a blood drive on December 19th, Jason's birthday.
"He had given blood one time and I know it was really important to him. He actually encouraged me to be an organ donor as well," said Pam.
They've collected 795 pints of blood.
"With that, 2208 lives might have been saved," said Pam.
"It doesn't get any better than that, it just doesn't," said Pam.
Pam has two messages that have the same result. One of making the right choice when you get behind the wheel. And, one of donating blood. Both actions will save lives.
"You have this life, do good with it," said Pam.
