MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Police arrested three teenagers for allegedly stealing a car after the car owner's father trailed them across town.
The victim, a 17-year-old, called police to report his car had been stolen. He'd left it running in a driveway at a friend's house on Milwaukee Street while he ran inside to grab something.
Then, about an hour later, the teen's father called to say he spotted his son's vehicle in the parking lot at East Towne Mall, and saw several young men drive off in two vehicles: his son's Grand Am and a Dodge Caravan, which also turned out to be stolen.
The father followed the suspects, keeping in touch with a dispatcher, and though he lost sight of the car and van as they headed downtown, officers picked up the trail and found the vehicles on Worthington Avenue.
The officer discovered the suspected abandoned both in a parking lot, but a second officer was able to round them up. They discovered a fake handgun and numerous items of clothing inside the van.
The teens, two age 15 and the other 16, were arrested on tentative charges of Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Owner's Consent.
