NEW YORK (WKOW) -- Tavern on the Green, long a staple of Big Apple cuisine, will serve its last meal on New Year's Eve after filing for bankruptcy.
The former sheepfold at the edge of Central Park plated 700,000 meals every year and brought in $38 million just a few years ago.
The restaurant's $8 million debt will be covered at an auction of decor that has bewitched visitors for decades: Baccarat and Waterford chandeliers, Tiffany stained glass and more.
A judge will decide next month whether another restaurateur taking over the space can reopen with the Tavern on the Green name, valued at about $19 million.
