PARIS (WKOW) -- There are a few spots in the economic downturn and recovery at the end of 2009, including a drop in the price of champagne.
France's Champagne houses and retailers say 2009 was a tough year and they have had to slash prices to keep up with plunging exports.
The sparkling wine can only be made in a specific region of France and the move causes division among vintners.
Some of the smaller Champagne houses are driving the discounts to try and boost sales. Bigger houses are trying to sell off stocks, causing concern that price cuts could detract from the prestige.
