NEW YORK (WKOW) -- "The Hurt Locker" took home top honors at a meeting of the National Society of Film Critics Sunday.
The film, about an elite Army bomb squad unit in Iraq, was chosen best picture of 2009, along with its director Kathryn Bigelow and actor Jeremy Renner.
The society often picks critical darlings and rarely does its selections mirror the Academy Awards.
The society chose Yolande Moreau as best actress for her performance in "Seraphine," a French film about the painter Seraphine de Senlis.
Joel and Ethan Coen won best screenplay for "A Serious Man;" "Beaches of Agnes 40" was selected best non-fiction film.
