MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin wardens arrested nearly 30 felons during later year's gun deer hunt for possessing a firearm, the most in seven years.
A report released by the state Department of Natural Resources says wardens arrested 29 felons in 2009. That's compared with nine in 2008, 16 in 2007 and nine in 2006.
Felons are prohibited from possessing firearms under state and federal law but are allowed to purchase hunting licenses in Wisconsin.
Eau Claire democrat State Rep. Jeff Smith is working on a bill to prohibit felons from purchasing any kind of gun hunting license.
