(UPDATED) - The father of Melissa Elliot confirms this morning that she's been found safe in Haiti, and Thomas Schloemer is also safe at the U.S. Embassy.
Mike and Lisa Elliot traveled to Florida this morning to get as close to the situation as possible. Lynn University has hired two private helicopters to try to rescue the students. Their daughter is now on her way to the Dominican Republic.
MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- Two students from Milwaukee are missing in Haiti.
They were on a humanitarian mission in Haiti from Lynn University of Florida.
Mike Elliot of the Town of Merton says his daughter, Melissa Elliot, 20, was among the 12 students and two faculty members staying in the Hotel Montana. It reportedly collapsed in the quake and is located about 10 or 15 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince.
He says his daughter's best friend, Thomas Schloemer, from Fox Point, was also in the group.
The students were helping staff food distribution tables and visit orphanages with Food For The Poor. Fighting back tears, he said the waiting has taken its toll on him and his wife. She was rushed to the hospital with breathing troubles.
Elliott says the university hired two private helicopters to try to rescue the students.
