MADISON (WKOW) -- The emotional tremors of Tuesday's earthquake have traveled across the world. Many people want to help with the many Haiti relief efforts, but the trick is finding out the best way to help.
The American Red Cross says the number one way you can help is by donating money.
That way, the Red Cross can use money to buy whatever is needed most, and to stimulate the Haitian economy by buying supplies there.
Haiti's immediate needs are basic: medical tools, blankets, and clean water. In order to meet those needs, the Red Cross needs money, not the items themselves.
"There is not a way to get those materials into Haiti right now, and for the Red Cross, there is not a way to collect and track and ship all of those kinds of contributions," said Nicole Hoffmann, director of development for the Red Cross Badger Chapter.
If you do want to give money, you don't even have to leave your house to do it.
The UW Credit Union has set up a different kind of direct deposit, from your bank account straight to the Red Cross.
Don't bank with them? Grab your cell phone.
You can text the word ''Haiti" to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross from your cell phone bill.
You can also give blood, but the red cross provides no guarantee your blood donation will go directly to Haiti.
For now, the best way to help Haiti is by giving from your bank account.
