Middle school students raise money for Haiti

MADISON (WKOW) --  Students at Madison's Lowell and O'Keefe Middle Schools did something positive.

Students sold a variety of baked goods as well as coffee and hot cocoa to raise money for the Red Cross's relief efforts in the devastated country. Organizers say they had a goal of raising $500 dollars, but more than doubled that raising more than $1200 bucks.

Saint Mary's Hospital is matching their effort, so all in all, students raised more than 24-hundred dollars.

Lisa Koenig, with Saint Mary's Hospital says, "We've talked about it a lot this week. About being socially responsible, about being aware about what's going on in the world, making it clear that you can always do something for those not as well as off as you. I think the kids have a good grasp of it and are really happy to be doing this."

Students at O'Keefe held a similar drive for tsunami relief in 2004. They raised nearly $400-dollars for Sri Lanka.
