UPDATE: Flags fly at half-staff Wednesday in Wisconsin


MADISON (WKOW)-- Governor Doyle has ordered flags at across the state to fly at half-staff Wednesday.

The order is in honor of U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jacob Meinert of Fort Atkinson, who was killed in action in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, January 10th.


FORT ATKINSON (WKOW) -- A 20-year-old Marine from Fort Atkinson killed in Afghanistan will be laid to rest in his hometown on Wednesday. The service will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Lance Cpl. Jacob "Jake" A. Meinert died Jan. 10 after stepping on or near a land mine in the Helmand province of Afghanistan.

Meinart lived in Racine before moving to Fort Atkinson when he was 15. He joined the Marines in July of 2007 after graduating from Fort Atkinson High School.

He was on his second tour of duty overseas. He previously served an eight-month deployment in Iraq.

Meinert was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. Other awards he previously received include the National Defense Service medal, Global War on Terrorism Service medal and the Afghanistan and Iraq Campaign medals.
