Haitian government says 150,000 confirmed dead in capital alone

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI (WKOW) -- Haiti's government says the confirmed death toll from this month's earthquake has topped 150,000 in the capital area alone.

The country's communications minister says there are thousands more dead elsewhere around the country and still buried under the rubble in Port-au-Prince.

Experts say chances are slim that more survivors will be found, though Saturday searchers rescued a man buried for 11 days in the wreckage.

Meanwhile, U.S. and Brazilian soldiers have been handing out food and water to thousands of people at a health center in a notorious slum in Haiti's capital today. The Cite Soleil area has been the scene of some looting and violence since the earthquake. But today, the people lined up as the soldiers handed out food rations, high-energy biscuits, bags of uncooked beans and water.

One woman says while the handouts will help, her family has no money to buy food and will need more.
