Double hand transplant recipient discharged from hospital
PITTSBURGH (WKOW) -- The man who received the nation's first double hand transplant left a Pittsburgh hospital after doctors determined his body was not rejecting his new hands.
Jeff Kepner, 58, was discharged from a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center after medicine cleared a rash that doctors thought might be his body rejecting the new hands.
Kepner received the transplants back in May and went home in October. He returned to the hospital last week after a rash developed on both hands. Doctors applied an ointment to suppress his immune system.
A bacterial infection caused Kepner to lose his hands and feet a decade ago. The hands were donated by a 23-year-old Pennsylvania man.
