MADISON (WKOW) -- New data released this week by the Madison Police Department shows overall crime dropped more than 4 percent in 2009 in nearly all categories.

MPD Chief Noble Wray points to the addition of more officers on the streets, better crime analysis tools and data-driven deployments for the decrease in crime.

According to FBI statistics, all Madison crime categories were down last year, except for theft. Specifically, Madison Police are concentrating on the upwards trend of theft from cars.

Chief Wray says, "That is one of those quality of life crimes, I mean, people consider their vehicle as personal space, and when something like that happens they feel violated in many ways, and we did see those go up."

The 2009 vs. 2010 numbers include:

• Murder: 4 in 2009, 10 in 2008
• Forcible Rape: 31 in 2009, 50 in 2008
• Aggravated Assault: 457 in 2009, 463 in 2008
• Robbery: 364 in 2009, 368 in 2008
• Burglaries: 1523 in 2009, 2038 in 2008
• Stolen Autos/Trucks/Motorcycles: 346 in 2009, 498 in 2008
• Theft: 6015 in 2009, 5720 in 2008
• Simple Assault: 1278 in 2009, 1360 in 2008
