WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- The amount of money Americans have lost to online fraud doubled last year to about $560 million according to a report released by the FBI and a private fraud-fighting watchdog group.
Complaints of Internet scams rose 22 percent in 2009.
Scams falsely using the FBI's name actually accounted for 16 percent of the more than 300,000 complaints received last year, topping the list.
Another scam involved messages with a voice similar to that of President Barack Obama, urging people to visit a web site to claim a share of government stimulus money. Visitors paid a fee but never received the funds.
