Netflix cancels $1m contest after privacy concerns

MADISON (WKOW) -- Netflix was offering $1 million to the lucky mathematician who could devise a better system for recommending movies.

The online movie rental company gave personal rental history -- everything short of the customer's name itself.

However, some people proved a clever person could connect the dots with age, zip code, rental history and other factors and actually identify specific people.

A closeted lesbian mother filed the lawsuit.

Now, Netflix says it will abandon the contest.

The consumer website Consumerist has more on the interesting and unique case.
