Consumer warning about Cottage Grove exercise equipment company

MADISON (WKOW) - The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about a fitness and exercise company in Cottage Grove that is receiving a growing number of complaints. At this time, it has an "F" rating with the BBB.

Johnson Health Tech North America, Inc., which does business as Horizon Fitness and Merit Fitness, manufactures treadmills, ellipticals and stationary bicycles in Taiwan for distribution in the United States. The location in Cottage Grove is the only national distributor. It operates an online store and supplies exercise equipment to local retailers like Dunham's, The Sports Authority and Dick's Sporting Goods.

In the past 36 months, the BBB received 43 complaints about the company. Since January, 12 complaints have been received, including faulty advertising, customer service, delivery and product issues.

The BBB reminds customers to be cautious about deals that are "too good to be true". According to the BBB, Horizon Fitness advertises its products are the "finest exercise equipment, bringing good performance and reliability into the homes of consumers." The company also advertises free shipping, although BBB officials say there are many complaints about products being severely damaged during transit. BBC officials say "free inside delivery" claims were also problematic.

The BBB also says to read the fine print about warranties and service clauses. Finally, check a company's reliability before making a purchase at the BBB's website. The number to call is 1-800-273-1002.
