MADISON (WKOW) -- Dane County is taking a groundbreaking leap to assist prospective organ donors.
It will be the first county in Wisconsin to offer employees paid leave if they donate organs or bone marrow.
County Executive Kathleen Falk introduced the ordinance Wednesday at a press conference.
Organ donors and people who received organ donations spoke at the event.
Officials hope it will convince more people to donate.
"Without this policy," said Dr. Anthony D'Alessandro, "there will be fewer people who will be willing to donate. With his policy, I'm confident that there will be more people and more lives saved."
County employees that donate an organ will get 30 days of paid sick leave, and employees that donate bone marrow get five days of paid leave.
